Privacy notice
... and why your voice matters
You’ve just had a global experience. Maybe you studied, interned, volunteered, or joined a short-term program abroad. Maybe your journey happened from home – connecting with people and ideas across borders, without needing to travel. However it looked, it was yours – and we’d love to hear about it.
miXabroad is a global survey created to capture what these international experiences are really like – from your point of view.
Your reflections help your university or college understand what worked, what didn’t, and how it all shaped your personal, academic and professional journey.
Why your voice matters:
- You’ve lived it. Your experience is real, and your insights are powerful.
- Your feedback helps universities focus on what actually makes these programs life-changing.
- You’ll be helping shape better, more inclusive, more meaningful opportunities for students just like you.
At miXabroad, we believe that global experiences should change lives, build connections and develop global citizens.
The data we gather helps institutions benchmark their programs and do better – from how they support students, to the impact they make in communities around the world.
Thanks for taking the time to complete this survey. You’re not just looking back – you’re helping shape what comes next.
How we use your responses (and protect your privacy)
Introduction
miXabroad is committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring the security of your personal data. This Privacy Notice explains how we collect, use and protect your data when you participate in our survey about international experiences. It also explains your rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Who we are
miXabroad is an organization dedicated to enhancing the understanding of international student experiences. We aim to improve global education outcomes while respecting the privacy and confidentiality of survey participants.
What data we collect
The survey collects information about your international experience, such as:
- The type and location of your program.
- Demographics (e.g. age, gender, nationality).
- Your opinions, experiences and outcomes related to your program.
It is not standard to collect directly identifying information. However, in some cases, participants may be asked to provide identifying information such as student ID or email address for purposes including survey administration, completion tracking, prize draws, or follow-up research participation.
Where collected, this information is stored separately from survey responses and is not used in benchmarking or reporting analysis. Identifying information is removed prior to analysis and is not attached to reported survey results, except in limited safeguarding circumstances as described below.
How we use your data
The data we collect is de-identified, meaning that your responses cannot be linked back to you personally by your home institution. The information you provide will be used to:
- Analyse trends and patterns in education abroad.
- Create comparative reports and insights to improve education abroad programs.
- Inform stakeholders, such as universities and policymakers, about the outcomes of international experiences.
Legal basis for processing
We process your data based on your consent, which you provide by agreeing to participate in the survey. You may withdraw your consent at any time without affecting your participation or any associated benefits.
Data storage and security
All data is securely stored on servers compliant with GDPR requirements. We implement robust technical and organizational measures to protect your data from unauthorised access, loss or misuse.
Data sharing
Your de-identified data may be shared with:
- Partner organizations, such as universities or state and federal institutions.
- Stakeholders and policymakers in the field of international education.
Retention of data
We will retain your de-identified data indefinitely for longitudinal reporting. De-identified data will be retained for future research purposes consistent with this notice.
Your rights
Under GDPR, you have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Access and rectification: While we do not collect directly identifying information, your survey responses are anonymous and cannot be linked back to you. As such, we are unable to provide access to or correct specific responses after submission.
- Withdrawal of consent: You may choose to withdraw from the survey at any time before submitting your responses. Once submitted, your responses are anonymised and cannot be retrieved.
- Right to lodge a complaint: If you believe your rights under GDPR have been violated, you have the right to file a complaint with a supervisory authority.
Safeguarding and student wellbeing
miXabroad surveys are designed to protect participant privacy. Survey responses are analysed and reported primarily in de-identified and aggregated form, and identifying information is not attached to survey responses used for reporting or benchmarking. However, where a survey response indicates a serious risk to the safety, wellbeing, or rights of the participant or others, miXabroad may share limited identifying or contextual information with your home institution to support appropriate safeguarding and duty-of-care responsibilities.
This may include disclosures relating to, but not limited to:
-
Sexual assault or sexual misconduct
-
Harassment, abuse, or exploitation
-
Unsafe living, working, or learning environments
-
Threats to personal safety
- Serious risks to the participant or others
Where escalation is necessary, miXabroad shares only the minimum information reasonably required to enable the institution to assess and respond appropriately. This may include contextual information such as your host institution, host country, or program. Where identifying information has been collected for survey administration purposes, it may be used solely for safeguarding escalation where necessary.
Outside of these limited circumstances, identifying information is stored separately from survey responses and is removed prior to analysis. Survey results are reported only in de-identified and aggregated form.
